We must end youth homelessness

Youth homelessness is a critical issue in Australia. There are almost 46,000 children and young people currently experiencing homelessness.

Family violence, family homelessness, financial difficulties as well as physical and mental health issues are significant causal factors placing young people at risk of homelessness.

It is a growing problem. In 2018-19, there were a total of 92,300 unassisted requests for help. Without access to help, the likelihood of young people experiencing long-term homelessness increases.

Youth homelessness is a major cause of lifelong homelessness. This is why ending youth homelessness is the focus of Stepping Stone House. Our model of care, founded on our evidence-based “Stepping Stone House Way”, transforms the lives of young people at risk of homelessness.

The Stepping Stone House Way

Stepping Stone House is a home for young people at risk of homelessness who have survived traumatic childhoods.

We are a community and a home away from home, creating social impact by helping young people build their independence and a compelling future, one step at a time. We engage young people with passion, energy and creativity, focusing and building on individual strengths and experiences.

Our “building blocks” support our young people to be “the best they can be” by providing professional casework practice, a nurturing therapeutic environment, confidence building through adventure education and focusing on strengths and positive role modelling.

We value education and provide opportunities to learn about life and decision making. We provide a safe and stable environment with individual focus on the physical and emotional needs of young people.

With a standout 94% staff retention rate, young people have a consistency of care they may never have experienced elsewhere in their lives.
